5 Ways to Fix Overwhelm
5 Reasons Why You Are Overwhelmed and How To Fix It
Are you swamped with work and household chores? Do you feel like no matter what you do, you still need help to handle your day-to-day activities? If you are overwhelmed, you may feel like your life is spiraling out of control. So, let’s figure out why you might be overwhelmed and ways to fix it.
1. Your Life Is Disorganized
If you are feeling overwhelmed, you need to be more organized. You may have a million things to do and need more time to do them. You will feel overwhelmed if you don’t have your to-do list organized and prioritized— or try to do everything at once.
Instead of trying to do it all, list the top things you need to do in order of importance. Then you’ll have to get to the things you don’t get to another day. The important stuff, though, you’ll be able to tackle each day, and that will help you to feel less overwhelmed.
2. You Spend Too Much Time Doing Time-wasting Activities
Sure, social media is fun to check on once or twice daily. It’s a chance for you to see how your friends are doing without having to call and ask them. However, if you spend hours scrolling through social media, you will feel overwhelmed.
You have a long list of things to do and have spent a good chunk of your time on mindless scrolling. Or maybe you surf through Netflix for an hour an evening before you ever find anything to watch.
Your time is valuable. You want to spend your time accomplishing your goals for the day, and then if you have any extra time left over, you can use it on other activities. So, if you focus your time and effort on what’s important, you will feel more relaxed than when you avoid your deadlines or work.
3. Self-care Isn’t a Priority
If you are not taking the time to practice self-care a little bit each day, this could be why you are feeling overwhelmed. Your body needs a good night’s rest and a proper diet to feel your best and perform well.
Suppose you are eating out every day instead of cooking a well-balanced diet. In that case, your body will feel sluggish and cause you to move through your day slower or get tired quicker than if you eat healthier. If you try to sleep for four hours a night and bounce back up to start the day, sleep deprivation will eventually cause you to feel more overwhelmed.
You will feel much less overwhelmed when you ensure that your physical body is taken care of by eating, sleeping, and just tending to YOU. Put yourself first if you want to ensure that you get everything done without unnecessary stress. Even if you only have a short time to eat, pick up a salad or fruit, and you’ll feel much better.
4. There Are Toxic People in Your Life
You will feel overwhelmed if you have toxic people at home or work. When you surround yourself with positive people, you will feel more positive. If everyone around is stressed out and complaining, then you will be too. Sometimes being around toxic people can drain the energy right out of you.
Recognize the toxic people in your life and find a way to cut them out. If you must associate with these people at work, make it the bare minimum. You can be polite and still distance yourself. If there are toxic people in your home, suggest that everyone try to be more positive or look into counselors or coaches to learn how to uplift the home environment.
5. Your Environment Is Messy
If your environment is messy, then you’re going to feel overwhelmed. For example, if you need to find a project lying on your desk and can’t find it through all the mess, you’ll get stressed out. Research suggests that clutter can harm mental health and well-being.
You must ensure that your workspace and at least one room in your home where you spend most of your time is tidy. You can invest in some drawers or filing cabinets to keep essential paperwork in neat order.
Pick up each day at the end of the day. Of course, there will be messes if you have pets or kids at home. However, if you set an hour before bed walking around and tidying everything up, you will be more relaxed. You can wake up the next day ready to start your day without the added stress of being surrounded by clutter and chaos.
