3 Tips for Goal Setting

Successful people have direction. They have confidence. What else do successful people have in common? They are good at goal setting.

Setting goals gives you a purpose and helps you better yourself in work or your personal life. This article will discuss some tips for goal setting so that you can learn to set and achieve goals more frequently.

1. Write Your Goals Down to help with Goal Setting

When you write your goals down on paper, you are more motivated to go after them. When you put your dreams down on paper, they become tangible. The more real your goals are, the more likely you are to focus on them.

So, take your goals and write them down on paper, type them on the computer, or get a dry-erase board and put them there so you can make them tangible and attainable. Then you can look at them each day and be reminded of where you want to be.

2. Stick To One or Two Specific Goals to help with goal setting

It’s always good to have many goals but not so much at the same time. It’s much easier to pick one or two that are important to you and stick to those. The power of goal setting is choosing something specific and positive that you want to accomplish, then figuring out all the baby steps you need to reach that goal.

For example, let’s say your goal is to lose weight. Make it specific. You will lose fifteen pounds by the end of May to look extra stunning in your new dress on vacation. Now you have a specific deadline and a reward for your efforts.

If you have another passionate dream and can work on it while losing weight, great. If not, put it on hold until after you meet your weight loss goal, and then you will have more dedication and time for the next goal.

3. Visualize Yourself Achieving These Goals

Visualization is a technique that creates a picture for your subconscious mind. When you visualize yourself meeting your particular goal, you can use your senses to train your brain for the way it will feel when that event happens.

For example, let’s say your goal is to start your own business. What steps would you take to get there? What type of classes or education would you need? What start-up costs would you have?

Then imagine what your life looks like running that business. What clothes do you have on? What types of food do you taste as this new business owner? What sounds do you hear? Is your business outside, and do you hear birds singing? Or is your business inside, and you hear the soft hum of the air conditioner while you take a call with your first paying client?

Once you start to see what your life will be like when you’ve accomplished your dreams with determination and hard work, you’ll be one step closer to reaching them.
